Haitian President Jovenel Moïse assassinated at home


Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been assassinated after an attack amid the political and economic crisis. According to interim Prime Minister- Claude Joseph’s statement, He was assassinated by a group of unidentified people who attacked him at his private residence whereas Moïse’s wife, Martine Moise is hospitalised where she is receiving medical treatment.


The assassination coincided with a wave o gang violence in Port-au-Prince as armed groups have battled with police and one another for control of the streets in recent months, turning many districts of the capital into no-go-zones.


The bloodshed in Haiti is driven by worsening poverty and political unrest. Haiti is politically polarized and is facing a growing humanitarian crisis and shortages of food; fears of widespread chaos are spreading. Amidst all this The Dominican Republic has announced that it is closing the border it shares with Haiti on the island of Hispaniola.


Haiti is home to nearly 11 million people and the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. The country has struggled to achieve stability since the fall of the Duvalier dictatorship in 1986 and grappled with a series of coups and foreign interventions.
